What is the difference between a Psychologist and a Clinical Psychologist?

Psychologists complete 6 years of full-time (or equivalent in part-time) training comprised of 4 years of a full-time university degree plus 2 years of postgraduate supervised experience. (These are curreently the minumum requirements in NSW).

Clinical Psychologists typically complete all the same basic training as Psychologists but, in addition, complete at least an additional 2 years of full-time university training at Master’s degree level or above in Clinical Psychology. They receive further specialist training in more severe psychological problems and complete internships in several clinical settings. Their training usually involves more specific and intensive training in psychological treatments for particular conditions. Most receive significant training in “Cognitive Behaviour Therapy” (CBT), a group of psychological therapies shown by research to be highly effective in treating a range of psychological conditions.

Clinical Psychologists typically assist people with problems such as: depression, panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), social anxiety, phobias, stress management, anger management, trauma reactions and PTSD, learning to live with chronic pain, marriage & relationship therapy, sexual disorders, eating disorders, etc.

What is the difference between a Clinical Psychologist and a Psychiatrist?

Psychiatrists train as medical doctors first, and subsequently complete training in psychological problems. As they are medical doctors they have expertise in prescribing medication for the treatment of psychological conditions. They may also provide psychological therapy.

Clinical Psychologists do not prescribe medication. Their focus tends to be on teaching people skills to cope with psychological difficulties and resolving the problems that cause psychological conditions. Many Clinical Psychologists utilise “Evidence-Based Therapy” (EBT) or “Evidence-Based Practice” which means they employ techniques that research has shown to be effective in treating particular problems. Many of these EBT strategies come under the title of “Cognitive Behaviour Therapy” (CBT).
